  1. Pat Surface was a great patron of the arts, as well as an accomplished artist in her own rite. She helped to foster my artistic career, along with many other great American artists. She was an expert as a talent scout and a humanitarian. She came into my world as an art angel and she left this world the same way. We had a friendship that defied description and convention. I loved the person Pat was and am heartbroken at her passing. My artwork will forevermore be flavored by her friendship and sense of humor. I loved Pat as a Mother, Sister, Patron and Friend. Anyone who knew her was truly blessed to have such a friendship.

  10. To Pat’s Family:

Pat was my first friend when I moved to Keota, Iowa at age 11. She made the way for me in my new town. The last time I saw her was about five years ago when a group of us gathered for lunch in Kalona. It was a special time because Mary Ann and her mother Mabel who lived next door to Pat for many years were also with us. They, along with Pat, are gone now. Pat and I stayed in close touch since that meeting. Like so many others, she encouraged me in my tentative art attempts. Not only do I remember her art talent from the Keota years, but could she ever dance! The memories are so precious.

    Love to all of you,

  17. Dear Linda,

How nice of you to write to us, we so appreciate any kindness and support right now. After watching her battle COPD, and see her slow suffocation these last few years, I feel such relief for HER that I nearly feel in shock still. She was so sick, and at death’s door for nearly a decade, COPD is that kind of disease. If it wasn’t for the feeling of relief for my invincible mom, I am not sure I could even stand up or speak these days. I am such a mixture of these 7 stages of grief, it seems to vary by the day.

Thanks so much for all of your lovely thoughts Linda,

    With all our love,

    Tracey and Fred

  18. JANE! This just makes my day! How wonderful to hear from someone so close to her way back when you and she were kids in Iowa. Over the years I heard about all of you and especially Mabel, who apparently was quite a firecracker, right to the end! It is fun for me to know that she could dance as I love dancing too. When my folks square danced, and I was a teen, my boyfriend and I went along too, it was fun and mom was really good. What kind of dancing did you two do back then? The twist, or the Pony, the swim maybe?

Fred and I will make sure the family sees your comment too, we love to hear about the IOWA days. Thanks again for writing and sharing such nice thoughts and stories about my mom.

    Love,

    Tracey and Fred

  21. Paul,

Thanks so much for caring enough to write to us, we REALLY appreciate any loving, comforting words like yours at this time. We still feel so RAW, even though we must have faith that she is out of the slow suffocation hell that COPD had on her and in a better place. We hope to see you and hear you sing and cheer us up again soon. Love, Tracey and Fred
